Indoor and outdoor tables are built differently, and the two aren't interchangeable, so start here. An indoor top is chipboard or MDF, gives the truest bounce, and is ruined by damp — keep it inside. An outdoor top is a weatherproof laminate or aluminium composite on a rust-treated frame; it survives being left out, at the cost of playing slightly lower and slower. All-weather models sit between the two, for anyone who wants one table to do both jobs.
Top thickness is what actually sets the bounce, not the price tag. Thicker is more consistent and more expensive: around 12–16 mm suits home and casual play, 19 mm is the usual club standard, and 22–25 mm is competition specification. Before you buy for a room that does double duty, check the folded footprint and whether the frame has playback mode — that's what lets one player practise alone.
