Carbon and composite table tennis blades — frames with a fibre layer built in among the wood veneers.

The fibre stiffens the blade and widens the area that responds consistently, so off-centre contacts lose less speed. That makes a composite blade faster and more forgiving on mishits than an all-wood frame, at the cost of some of the feedback that tells you exactly where you hit the ball. Which fibre matters: carbon is the most direct, arylate and aramid soften the response, and ZLC sits at the stiff, fast end.

Where the layer sits matters as much as what it is. An inner-fibre blade keeps the layer next to the core and stays closer to a wood-like feel on soft touch; an outer-fibre blade puts it directly under the rubber for a more immediate response.
