Hard Sponge Rubbers

Table tennis rubbers with a hard sponge — the medium-hard and hard sheets, built for a full, fast stroke.

A hard sponge stores more energy and returns it directly. On a committed topspin it gives the most speed and the most spin a rubber can; on a hesitant one it gives very little, because the ball never sinks in far enough to be gripped. It rewards technique and does not supply it.

That makes these the rubbers of advanced and competitive attackers, and the wrong place to begin: a soft or medium sponge teaches more. Tacky, Chinese-style rubbers are usually here too. The rubber selection guide places each by sponge hardness and shows each brand’s own figure.
