Inverted Rubbers

Inverted table tennis rubbers — the smooth, pimples-in sheets most players use on both sides of the racket.

An inverted rubber turns its pimples inward and presents a smooth face to the ball. That face grips, which is what makes spin: topspin, backspin and the serves built on them. It is the type to start with and the type most players stay with.

Inside the type the choice is mostly the sponge. A softer sponge is more forgiving and easier to spin at a moderate swing; a harder one gives more back to a full stroke. Our rubber selection guide places every one of them by sponge hardness, brand by brand.
