Short Pips Rubbers

Short pips table tennis rubbers — pimples-out sheets for a flat, direct game close to the table.

The pimples face outward, so less of the rubber touches the ball. A short-pips sheet makes less spin of its own than an inverted rubber and reacts less to the spin coming at it, which is why hitters and blockers use it: the ball goes where the stroke sends it. The return comes back flat and early, which opponents used to inverted rubbers find awkward.

Many players put short pips on one side only, usually the backhand. The rubber selection guide lists them beside the other types, with the sponge thicknesses each is sold in.
