Where the table will live decides almost everything else. An indoor top is chipboard or MDF, gives the truest bounce, and is ruined by damp — it has to stay inside. An outdoor table uses a weatherproof laminate or aluminium composite on a rust-treated frame; it survives being left out, and plays slightly lower and slower in exchange. That trade is real and worth accepting deliberately rather than discovering later.
Top thickness is what actually sets the bounce, not the price. Around 12–16 mm suits home and casual play, 19 mm is the usual club standard, and 22–25 mm is competition specification. Check the practical things before the specification. Measure the room, not just the table: a full-size table needs clear space to play around it.
