3-Star Balls
Three-star table tennis balls — 40 mm poly balls at competition grade.
The star rating is a tolerance, not a brand tier. Three-star balls are held to the tightest limits on roundness, weight, hardness and bounce, and this is the grade required in sanctioned play. That consistency is what you are paying for: every ball out of the box behaves the same way, which matters in a match and matters much less in a drill.
For training volume and robot feeding, one- and two-star balls do the same job for less. Colour is a playing decision — white and orange are both regulation, so pick whichever contrasts with your table and the players' shirts.

Since the switch from celluloid balls to plastic balls, we have tried many different types in our tournaments. Our tournaments are rather large, with over 250 players, more than 30 tables, and over 1,500 matches. So it is very important for us to find the best ball—one that plays really well, and doesn't break very often. After much trial and error, I am very glad to announce that the new Donic 3 star P40+ is the best ball we have tried. We have used it already in over 6,000 matches, and the players really like it, and there is very little breakage. It plays and lasts extremely well. I fully endorse and recommend it. The same goes for the Donic Coach training balls. We have sent out hundreds to our clubs for practice and multi-ball use and they all really like them.
